At Texas Humane Heroes, ending pet homelessness and keeping pet ownership affordable takes more than what happens on the adoption floor. Every day, our staff and volunteers work behind the scenes to give hundreds of animals the care and comfort they need while they wait for their next chapter.

And this month, we’re getting ready for an exciting new chapter of our own: our new dog kennels open in just a few weeks! We’re looking for 40 new Kuranda beds to give dogs a comfortable place to rest while they wait for their forever families. If you’d like to help, you can send a Kuranda bed from our wish list.

Now, let’s go behind the scenes of another essential part of shelter life: laundry.

Laundry might not sound like a lifesaving job, but clean bedding, blankets, and towels are an essential part of keeping shelter animals comfortable and cared for.

Our team and volunteers run 16–20 loads every day, including surgical drapes used by our veterinary team. We keep six 50-gallon containers of laundry detergent on hand, and our industrial-sized machines are built to handle the volume – and the mess.

And our volunteers make it possible. Without them, keeping up with the laundry would require a full-time paid position.

We’re also grateful to a supporter who recently donated a new washer and dryer, bringing us to four washers and four dryers. Our friends at Noble Roofing helped load and transport the massive machines to our property.
