Be a Medical Hero

Animals Who Have No Other Chance

Some animals don’t just need help. Without Texas Humane Heroes, they would be euthanized.

Our veterinary team is often the only lifeline for pets with severe injuries or complex medical needs. Thanks to supporters like you, these animals are given a chance to heal, thrive, and find loving homes.

Below are just some of the medical cases we’ve rescued recently. Many of these animals have already found their forever homes. If you’re wondering who is still waiting, you can explore our adoptable animals and meet your next companion.

Every story is made possible by people who refuse to look away.

Cadabra

May 2026

Cadabra is a very young kitten who came to us through a partner shelter as an orphaned bottle baby weighing less than a pound. Despite her size, she has already faced multiple medical challenges in her short life.

She has been treated for parasites and coccidia and is receiving ongoing supportive care, including topical treatment for a sensitive, irritated area and close monitoring as she continues to grow.

Cadabra is still very young and vulnerable, but she is stable, in foster care, and progressing with the round-the-clock attention she needs.

Will you help support fragile kittens like Cadabra who depend on intensive medical care and foster support just to grow strong enough for a future home?

Sir Mix-a-Lot came to us as a very young puppy with a painful rectal prolapse that required immediate medical intervention. Our veterinary team stabilized him, placed a temporary repair, and ultimately performed a colopexy surgery to help prevent recurrence.

He has required ongoing medication, a strict soft-food diet, and close monitoring as he continues to heal and grow.

Despite his early medical challenges, Sir Mix-a-Lot is a bright, resilient puppy who is improving with every day of care.

Will you help support puppies like Sir Mix-a-Lot who need urgent, ongoing medical care to grow up healthy and pain-free?

Maggie

Maggie came to us from a partner shelter with a severe, infected wound at the base of her tail. The injury had become necrotic and infested with maggots, causing significant pain and requiring immediate medical intervention.

Our veterinary team cleaned and treated the wound, removed the damaged tail tissue, and started Maggie on pain medication, antibiotics, and supportive care to help her heal safely.

Despite everything she’s been through, Maggie is a resilient little kitten who is now recovering in our care and getting the second chance she deserves.

Will you help provide lifesaving medical care for vulnerable animals like Maggie?

Reggie

April 2026

Reggie came to us from a partner shelter with a painful abscess on his side, likely from an animal bite.

Our veterinary team treated the wound during surgery, carefully draining and cleaning the infection while starting him on antibiotics and pain medication to help him heal.

Now on the mend, Reggie isn’t letting any of it slow him down. This goofy, affectionate pup is full of personality and loves being close to his people—especially if it means extra snuggles and attention.

Reggie is healing well and ready for his next chapter.

Will you help give dogs like Reggie the care they need for a second chance?

Forrest

April 2026

Forrest is just a puppy, but he was already out of options. His owners could not afford his care and were considering euthanizing him in a field. Local Animal Services intervened, but without rescue placement, he would have been euthanized the next day.

We said yes.

When he arrived, he had a severe, untreated leg injury causing significant pain, with concern for serious infection. He was also covered in fleas, adding to his discomfort.

Our team immediately began stabilizing Forrest with pain medication and antibiotics, then moved quickly to perform the surgery he urgently needed.

Despite everything, Forrest remains gentle, resilient, and trusting.

Will you help give Forrest the second chance he deserves?

Rhine

April 2026

Rhine came to us as part of an orphaned litter, and while her siblings have all been adopted, she’s still on her journey.

She was born with swimmer syndrome, a condition that caused her back legs to splay outward, making it difficult for her to stand and walk.

With support from our team and her foster, Rhine is receiving the care and gentle therapy she needs to build strength and improve her mobility.

Bon Bon

April 2026

Bon Bon came to us after a finder reported seeing him get hit by a car about a week earlier. A partner shelter reached out, and we stepped in to help.

Our veterinary team immediately began treatment to stabilize him and address his injuries. With continued care and support, Bon Bon is now on the road to recovery.

Money

April 2026

Money, an 11-year-old dog, was brought to us after being hit by a car. A partner shelter reached out with an urgent plea. Without rescue, she would have been euthanized that day.

She arrived unable to stand, with multiple fractures and other medical concerns. Our veterinary team quickly stepped in to stabilize her and begin treatment.

Then, her story took a turn for the best! Money’s family came looking for her and drove three hours to bring her home.

Because of that urgent “yes,” Money got the care she needed and a second chance with the people who love her.

Eileen

April 2026

Eileen was owner-surrendered to a partner animal shelter, already sick and injured. She was severely underweight, struggling to move, and in critical condition when she came into our care. We suspect she had been hit by a car and needed to gain strength before she could undergo surgery to treat her injuries.

Our veterinary team provided intensive support, including fluids, pain management, and appetite support, doing everything possible to stabilize her and give her a chance.

Despite those efforts, Eileen’s condition continued to decline, and she passed away in our care.

She didn’t make it—but she was not alone, and she was not without care.

For animals like Eileen, we are often their last chance—and we say yes. Will you help us continue to fight for the ones who need us most?

Ghost

April 2026

Ghost is a senior dog who came to us from a partner shelter with multiple masses across his body. While they look concerning, they don’t appear to be causing him pain.

After careful evaluation, our veterinary team determined that removing all of his tumors may not be in his best interest due to the risks involved. Instead, we focused on treating what was impacting his comfort most.

Ghost recently underwent surgery for a serious infection, requiring a scrotal ablation. He’s now recovering and receiving the care he needs to stay comfortable and enjoy his days.

Will you help give dogs like Ghost the care they need in their most vulnerable moments?

Update: Ghost has now been adopted!

Kira

April 2026

Kira is a 2-month-old puppy who came to us with a serious condition where part of her rectum had slipped out of place.

Our veterinary team performed surgery to correct it, but the next day it happened again, causing her pain and straining. She was placed under anesthesia so the tissue could be safely put back in place, and a small stitch was added to help keep everything where it belongs while she heals.

She’s now on medication to keep her comfortable and prevent infection, and our team is closely monitoring her recovery after also treating a small infection near the area.

Kira has been through a lot at such a young age, but she’s getting the care she needs to heal.

Will you help give puppies like Kira a healthy start?

When we learned about Lolly, a dedicated volunteer drove out on a Saturday to bring her to Texas Humane Heroes. Our veterinary team immediately rearranged the surgery schedule to give her the urgent care she desperately needed.

To relieve her pain and give her the best possible quality of life, Lolly’s leg was amputated.
