Six Months After Rescue, Dog Finally Adopted
Kedge goes home for Christmas
On June 16, 2016, we rescued four dogs from the overcrowded Copperas Cove Animal Shelter. By July, Kedge was the only one still waiting for the right family to come along. Six months later, the Curnutt Family proved to be the Christmas Miracle Kedge was waiting for.
At just over a year old, Kedge was still full of puppy energy when he arrived at our Leander Adoption Center. The terrier mix was talkative, enthusiastic, and the very definition of bouncy. Though his history was unknown, it was clear walking quietly on a leash was a foreign concept.
As staff worked with Kedge, his true personality began to shine through. Daily walks improved his leash manners and supervised playgroups taught him the social skills he needed to make friends with other dogs. A short stay in a foster home brought back more good news; Kedge seemed to be housebroken, slept quietly in his crate, and was a great companion on car rides. But despite his progress, months passed by and no family came for Kedge.
With the holidays just around the corner, Adoption Counselor Jason Wolf decided to give Kedge some one-on-one time by bringing him home for a few days over Christmas. He took to Facebook to share photos of Kedge playing with his own dogs and lounging on the bed, including a plea for someone to please adopt this special boy. And, after staying with us for six months, the right family finally heard that call.
On Christmas Eve, the Curnutt family gave Kedge the forever home he’d been hoping for. Kedge, now called Frank, joined the family after their 13-year old Bull Terrier had to be put down. “I showed my son the photos Jason had posted of Frank sleeping and playing tug-of-war and it was all over. It was love from the moment we met. You know that feeling when you’re petting an animal and they lay their head on you and look up you with eyes that are just full of love? That’s Frank. It’s like he’s putting the weight of his past in your hands and saying, ‘I’m here and I hope you’ll stay with me forever.’ I can tell that he knows he’s been saved and he is grateful,” says new owner Tiffany Curnutt.
Though most of our pets are adopted within weeks, a few stay with us for longer. These “VIP” animals may be dogs who get a little too excited when visitors walk by, cats missing a notch from their ear, or pets with other traits that make them more challenging to find homes for.
