February is National Prevent a Litter Month! This is a very important matter that should always be kept in mind. National Prevent a Litter Month is the time to spread awareness, encouraging pet owners to spay/neuter their animals. This prevents unwanted litters that contribute to pet overpopulation and the euthanizing of animals in crowded shelters.
The reason that this holiday falls in February is because Spring is also known as “kitten season”. Letting just one female and her offspring (and their offspring) breed can add as many as 420,000 cats to the world in only seven years. As you can see, the problem gets out of hand quickly! All of these new lives are now competing with already available animals to find a forever home.
Here at Texas Humane Heroes, we spay and neuter all of our animals before they are available for adoption. We also provide these services every Tuesday and Thursday to the public to do our part in preventing litters. Not only does spaying/neutering help prevent homeless animals, it benefits the individual animal in many ways. One big benefit is that it can help prevent cancer in female cats if they are spayed before they ever go into heat. A plus for outdoor cat owners is that spaying/neutering helps prevent your cat from roaming far from home. If you enjoy the company of several animals you probably know that this procedure helps reduce aggression. These are only some of the many benefits that come with spaying/neutering your pet.
In the spirit of National Prevent a Litter month spread the word to all pet owners you know. Educate them on the importance of having their animal spayed/neutered and how they are saving the lives of so many other animals by doing so.
